The first sermon of Lord Buddha, also known as Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta or “Turning the Wheel of Dharma,” was a momentous event in the history of Buddhism. It took place in the Deer Park at Sarnath, near Varanasi, India, shortly after Buddha attained enlightenment.
Addressing five ascetic companions, Buddha expounded the Four Noble Truths, the core principles of his teachings. He began by acknowledging the reality of suffering (Dukkha), identifying its origin as craving and attachment (Tanha), and revealing the cessation of suffering (Nirodha) attainable through the Noble Eightfold Path. This path consisted of right understanding, thought, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration.
Buddha’s eloquence and profound wisdom left a profound impact on the listeners, leading to their enlightenment and the foundation of the Sangha, the monastic community.
