This date marks the “conquest” of this land by white colonialists claiming it as their own, and converting it into a penal colony. They enacted that it was “Terra nullius” – no man’s land – in order to justify that they could claim it as their own (albeit illegal) – this land was stolen, as too were their children. Consequently the indigenous ORIGINAL Australians were massacred, oppressed and controlled from this date forwards… To our First Nation people JANUARY 26th, is INVASION DAY – a day of mourning and grief for the loss of their land, culture, power and heritage.
In recent years there has been mounting pressure to change the date of Australia day – in respect and reverence for the suffering and grief inflicted upon our Original people.. However our governments are NOT LISTENING to the VOICES of the people…. we need to become UNIFIED to celebrate this beautiful nation as ONE family…on a day that does not alienate and segregate our people – dividing us into black fella versus white fella! The way forward is to CELEBRATE on a mutually acceptable day… so that we can HEAL the wounds of the past and truly honour the 65,000 year occupation and culture of our First nation custodians.
