CrowdStrike Outage: How to Fix a Windows PC with Blue Screen of Death
If the CrowdStrike software bug is still affecting your Windows computer, there are ways to fix it.
The worst may finally be over, but some are still dealing with the CrowdStrike mess.
Microsoft’s outage last Thursday crippled airlines, financial services, healthcare and energy companies around the world, leaving many people with “blue screens” on their computers at work. In response, Microsoft on Saturday released a recovery tool to repair Windows machines affected by the bug. The day before, CrowdStrike provided instructions on how to fix a crashed PC.
CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company that provides software to protect small and large businesses from cyberattacks and other online threats, sent out a software update that contains a flaw that crashes Windows computers running its software. The bug does not affect Mac or Linux computers.
“We understand the seriousness of this situation and deeply apologize for the inconvenience and disruption caused,” the company said in a statement.
The impact has been profound. Airport passengers have been stranded, hospital appointments have been postponed or canceled. And some employees are still unable to work. It’s all due to this software update that caused the infamous blue screen of death on Windows PCs due to a CrowdStrike flaw.
On LinkedIn on Monday, CrowdStrike posted that “a significant number of the approximately 8.5 million affected Windows devices are back online and operational.” However, if you’re still experiencing a blue screen on your PC, there is a fix that CrowdStrike itself has posted on its website.
How to Fix a Microsoft Windows PC Affected by the CrowdStrike Bug
Microsoft released a USB tool on the Microsoft Download Center on Saturday that it says will help IT administrators with the repair process. The tool requires administrator privileges and a BitLocker recovery key on each Windows PC. Microsoft also published recovery steps to fix an issue where a faulty CrowdStrike update causes your PC to restart frequently.
On Friday, CrowdStrike announced that it had identified the issue and released a fix. “We have directed our customers to our support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide ongoing, comprehensive updates on our website.”
What to Try First to Fix Blue Screen Issues The best option is to restart your Windows computer until the CrowdStrike fix arrives. On Friday, CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz appeared on NBC’s “Today” show and said, “Many of our customers have restarted their systems and we have fixed them so they work properly.”
That has indeed worked for many people. This X user had success after restarting the computer several times. Microsoft also claims to have received feedback that restarting multiple times (up to 15 times) can help.

Does China regret banning Bitcoin mining in 2021? Could it choose to revert? Can a single nation even control decentralized assets like BTC?
Only recently has Donald Trump paid attention to crypto. But now he wants to be the “crypto president” and is raising digital assets as a geopolitical issue.
Asked on July 16 why he was suddenly joining the crypto community, he told Bloomberg:
“If we don’t do this, China will take over and China will take it — or someone else, but probably China.”
In the interview, Trump explained how the recent experience with his “Mugshot” NFT collection “opened my eyes” to cryptocurrencies, saying: “80% of the money [from the NFT sale] was paid in crypto. It was amazing.”
“So we have a good foundation [i.e. crypto]. It’s a baby. It’s a child now. But I don’t want to be responsible for allowing another country to take over that sphere,” he added.
His comments raised several interesting questions — and not just whether China, which banned cryptocurrency trading and Bitcoin mining in 2021, is interested in returning to the cryptocurrency trading and mining markets.

China was once a major cryptocurrency player. The largest cryptocurrency exchanges, such as Binance, were based in China, and around 75% of Bitcoin mining took place on the Chinese mainland, according to estimates.
But in 2021, China cracked down on cryptocurrency trading and mining, and by July of that year, Bitcoin mining had all but disappeared on the mainland.
However, recent developments have raised speculation that “the Chinese government may be warming to cryptocurrencies and that Hong Kong could be a testing ground for such efforts,” Chainalysis noted in October.
Indeed, in April 2024, the central government approved the launch of several Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in Hong Kong. Some observers believe that China wants to make Hong Kong a crypto hub — despite an ongoing ban on trading on the mainland.
China’s Bitcoin ban is a “strategic mistake”
“Absolutely ,” Daniel Lacalle, chief economist at Tressis, told Cointelegraph.
“Beijing’s 2021 crackdown on mining was a strategic mistake,” Emiliano Pagnotta, associate professor of finance at Singapore Management University, told Cointelegraph.
China wants to keep tight control over capital outflows on the mainland, Wang, an assistant professor at the University of Essex’s economics department, told Cointelegraph, which is why it banned cryptocurrency trading.
But Hong Kong, although controlled by China, has a different economy. It has always had open market policies and free capital flow, and cryptocurrency could find a natural home in the former British colony. Wang added:
“ Hong Kong serves as a hub to allow some capital flow in and out of mainland China, which is important for Hong Kong as well as mainland China. ”
“The digital asset ETF market in Hong Kong has indeed seen substantial growth since its launch in April 2024,” Patrick Pan, president and CEO of OSL — a cryptocurrency exchange now operating in Hong Kong — told Cointelegraph.
Pan added that mainland China “has maintained a strict stance against cryptocurrency trading and speculation.”
Pan points out, however, that China has largely accepted the importance of the blockchain technology underlying cryptocurrencies.
“China’s development and gradual implementation of the digital yuan demonstrates its interest and ability to adopt blockchain technologies, which bring long-term benefits to the country’s financial infrastructure through improved efficiency and security of its financial systems,” Pan said.
China may be softening its stance on cryptocurrencies
The Chinese government’s decision-making is opaque, so it’s never known whether China truly regrets its 2021 crypto ban. But what is clear is that “the country is reassessing its approach, especially as it sees strategic value in digital assets,” Zennon Kapron, founder and director of consulting firm Kapronasia, told Cointelegraph, adding:
“The softer stance in Hong Kong may be a strategic move to remain competitive in the fintech and digital finance space without completely reversing its mainland policy.”
but is it too late?
“China still has advantages, such as access to cheap hardware and electricity in certain regions,” Kapron admitted. “If the government were to provide incentives or loosen restrictions, it is conceivable that some level of dominance could be reestablished.”
It wouldn’t be easy, however. “The global mining landscape has become more diverse, making it harder for any one country to dominate ,” Kapron noted.
“Bitcoin mining is not like making CPUs, but more like making solar panels, building railways, etc. China has the capacity and even the comparative advantage in this type of mass production.”
Cryptocurrency trading may be a different matter, however. China is unlikely to change its ban on trading on the mainland unless it first changes its capital markets policy, Wang said.
Pagnotta, by comparison, said China could still be a force within the cryptocurrency sector, especially if it demonstrated more pragmatism and regulatory clarity.
“China now appears more open to the cryptocurrency industry and has allowed the launch of Bitcoin and ETH ETFs in Hong Kong ,” Moreno said.
“Despite China’s ban on Bitcoin mining, Chinese mining pools still hold nearly 54% market share,” CryptoQuant founder Ki Young Ju posted on July 1. “While not all participants in these pools are Chinese, some mining farms may still be operating secretly in China, with authorities possibly hiding data.”
China’s central government also remains a Bitcoin whale as a result of its past activities — holding 190,000 BTC , or about 1% of the Bitcoin currently in existence. This is not a trivial amount.
Could China dominate crypto again?
Wang, for his part, believes that if China really puts its mind to it, it could still “play a super important, if not dominant, role” in the global crypto sector.
In addition to having natural advantages, there is huge demand for using cryptocurrencies to send Chinese assets overseas, Wang added, especially given China’s strict capital market controls.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume is still Binance, “which is a company founded in China by a Chinese person but then moved overseas, and yet 20% of Binance’s trading comes from China,” Wang noted.
Given Trump’s remarks, is cryptocurrency really emerging as a new theater of great power competition? According to Pagnotta:
“Trump wants votes, and he understands that tens of millions of Americans hold digital assets and see this as a major election issue. Drawing a contrast with Biden or China on this is politically astute.”
“ At a deeper level, Trump does not want a China/BRICS-led central bank digital currency [CBDC] to become dominant. Even if he hasn’t suddenly become a bona fide Bitcoiner, he certainly understands enough game theory to realize that Bitcoin is the politically neutral global property rights system of the 21st century,” Pagnotta added.
In doing so, the former US president could simply be applying the ancient wisdom that “ the enemy of my enemy is my friend.”
Still, others believe the suggestion that China might once again attempt to gain dominance in the global cryptocurrency market is simply wrong. Leading cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ether are too diversified and decentralized now to allow control by any sovereign state.
“China’s influence in the cryptocurrency market could grow, particularly through initiatives like the digital yuan,” Kapron said, “but achieving dominance over decentralized cryptocurrencies is an entirely different challenge.”
Trump’s recent statements may reflect a strategic concern, Kapron continued, “but the reality is that the decentralized and diversified nature of these digital assets acts as a significant barrier to any one nation’s dominance.”
Economist Lacalle added:
“There is no such thing as crypto nationalism. The beauty of the crypto market is that it is completely diversified and decentralized. The concept of government control of crypto makes no sense to anyone who understands independent currencies.”
